My mother-in-law began complaining about me to every neighbor on our street.
Whenever I went outside in the morning to take out the trash, the neighborhood women gave me strange looks.
One day, I overheard Martha telling our neighbor Linda:
“My daughter-in-law won’t even give me a cup of hot tea. I sit here hungry all day. If Robert knew how she treated me, he’d be ashamed.”
I froze.
That very morning, I had prepared her breakfast, cleaned her room, and brought her favorite tea to her bedside.
But I decided to remain silent.
The following week, things got even worse.
Another neighbor, Susan, stopped my husband on the street and asked:
“Robert, do you know your wife forces your mother to stay locked in her bedroom?”
That evening, my husband came home looking troubled.
“Emily, why is my mother telling everyone these things?”
I couldn’t hold back my tears anymore.
