I looked into her tearful eyes.
“Martha, I really did plan to teach you a lesson today.”
She nodded nervously.
“But my lesson isn’t finished.”
I walked into the kitchen and returned with a large cake.
Written across it were the words:
“No One in Our Family Is Ever Alone.”
Martha began sobbing.
“Emily… what is this?”
“I ordered it yesterday. I wanted everyone to hear my side, and I wanted you to understand how deeply you’ve hurt me. But now I realize we need more than an apology. We need a new beginning.”
Robert wrapped his arms around us.
That afternoon, we talked for hours.
I made one thing clear: I would never tolerate Martha spreading lies about me again.
She promised to be honest, even when she felt frightened or lonely.
We also decided to invite the neighbors over twice a week for tea, so Martha could enjoy their company without inventing stories.
