My son and daughter-in-law laughed when I walked into the courtroom. “Ha-ha, now we’re going to leave her with nothing,” Daniel whispered, certain the bruises they had put on my body would convince the judge I was confused, unstable, and hurting myself, but they had forgotten one important thing about me.

Daniel began calling me confused.

Long before the bruises.

Long before the guardianship petition.

Robert had apparently seen something I had refused to see.

I unfolded the letter.

Daniel whispered, “Mom, don’t.”

I looked at him.

“You knew about this?”

He said nothing.

That was answer enough.

I read only the relevant portion.

Eleanor,

If you are reading this because Daniel has attempted to pressure you for control of our assets, then I was right to be concerned.

I love our son.

But love does not require blindness.

Daniel has asked me repeatedly about the trust, the house, and whether your signature alone would be sufficient after my death.

I did not tell you because you were caring for me and already carrying too much.

I have amended the trust so that any beneficiary who attempts through fraud, coercion, abuse, or bad-faith guardianship proceedings to obtain control over you
