Lucille’s voice was low. “Say the word.”
Piper whispered, “Not here. Please.”
Shannon just stared at Maya.
I took a step forward.
“Please tell me you heard it.”
Adele touched my arm.
“Not yet, Dad.”
“He’s lying about us.”
“I know”.
“So why wait?”
Adele looked towards the white box that was next to the gift table.
“Because this time we’re not going to respond to a lie with anger. We’re going to respond with evidence.”
Across the room, Maya laughed as if she were winning.
“He’s lying about us.”

Before the scheduled speeches were over, Maya stood up and took the microphone.
“If you’ll allow me,” she said, smiling at Harry. “A mother should say a few words on her daughter’s wedding day.”
My chair squeaked as I backed up.
Adele was the first to get up.
Maya raised the microphone. “Adele, my precious girl, from the day you were born, I dreamed of seeing you in white.”
