Whenever someone admired our friendship, I would proudly say:
“If anything ever happens to me, I know Daniel will take care of my family.”
Today, remembering those words breaks my heart.
Three years ago, Margaret passed away after a serious illness.
During the final months of her life, Daniel visited our house almost every day.
He sat beside her bed, held her hand, and sometimes talked with her for hours.
Whenever I entered the room, they often fell silent.
At the time, I assumed they simply didn’t want to upset me.
But now I know they were talking about something else.
Once, I even overheard Margaret ask Daniel:
“Did you promise him?”
When I asked what she meant, my wife replied:
“I asked him to make sure you’re not alone after I’m gone.”
I even thanked my friend.
I had no idea what promise they had actually made to each other.
