On the Last Day of Our Vacation, My Best Friend of 42 Years Asked Me to Take One Final Photo Together—as Friends. When I Asked Why It Would Be Our Last, He Said, “Tomorrow, You’ll Find Out What I’ve Done Behind Your Back.”

“Robert, let’s take one last picture together.”

I laughed.

“Last? Daniel, what are you talking about? Aren’t we coming back next year?”

He didn’t smile.

He looked straight into my eyes for several seconds.

Then he quietly said:

“This will be our last photograph as friends.”

I thought he was joking.

“Daniel, don’t be ridiculous. We’ve been friends for 42 years. We’ll be friends until the day we die.”

He lowered his head.

“Maybe that’s what you believe, Robert. But tomorrow, everything will change.”

I immediately sensed something was wrong.

“What happened? Did the doctors tell you something?”

“No. I’m not sick.”

“Then what’s going on?”

He remained silent for a long moment.

Then he said something that sent a chill down my spine.

“Robert, I’ve done something you’ll never forgive me for. And the worst part is that it isn’t just my secret.”
