“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Grandpa said it was a secret. I didn’t want him to be sad.”
I held his hands.
“Ben, you never have to keep a grown-up’s secret if it makes you uncomfortable or afraid. You can always tell Mommy or Grandma.”
Robert knelt beside us.
“Grandma’s right, buddy. I should have stopped when you asked. I’m sorry.”
Ben looked at him seriously.
“Grandpa, if I can’t walk, will you still love me?”
Robert began crying.
“Ben, I loved you before you could even sit up. I’ll love you just as much whether you walk, run, or need someone to hold your hand forever.”
Ben hugged him tightly.
That evening, we told Emily everything. She was upset about the secrecy, but after reviewing the therapist’s instructions, she agreed Ben could continue practicing with professional guidance and only when he wanted to.
