My heart began pounding.
“Sweetheart, you can tell me anything. You’re never in trouble for telling Mommy the truth.”
Emma’s eyes filled with tears.
“But Grandpa said if you find out, everything will be ruined.”
I could barely breathe.
“Has Grandpa ever done anything that frightened you or made you uncomfortable?”
She shook her head quickly.
“No, Mommy. Grandpa is nice. But sometimes he cries in there.”
That last sentence confused me.
“Cry? Why?”
“I can’t tell you.”
I held her close and assured her she hadn’t done anything wrong.
But that night, I couldn’t sleep.
I kept remembering my father’s gentle smile, his kindness, the way he always greeted Emma with open arms.
I desperately wanted to believe there was an innocent explanation.
But my daughter’s safety mattered more than anything.
The following morning, I called my father.
“Dad, can Emma spend a few hours with you today?”
