“Could you all leave us alone for a few minutes?”

Our oldest son laughed.
“Dad, what did you do that requires a private conversation?”
Everyone laughed.
Everyone except me.
A few minutes later, George and I were alone in the room.
He sat down on the couch and clasped his hands together. I sat across from him.
“George, what is going on?”
He said nothing for a long moment. Then he finally looked at me.
“Mary, it’s time you knew why I really married you.”
The words felt like ice running through me.
“What are you talking about?”
“What I’m about to tell you is something I should have told you fifty-four years ago.”
I stared at him, trying to imagine what I was about to hear.
My mind immediately went to the worst possibilities. Maybe he had never really loved me. Maybe there had been another
woman.
Maybe our entire marriage had been based on money, obligation, or some agreement I knew nothing about.

George stood up and went into our bedroom. What happened next read in the comments ‼️👇‼️👇
When he came back, he was carrying a small old wooden box. I had never seen it before. He placed it on the table.
“This was given to me three days before our wedding.”
Inside was an old envelope. Yellow with age. My name was written across the front. Mary. My hands began to tremble.
“Who wrote this?”
George took a deep breath.
“Your father.”
