The couple were commonly reported to be close in height.
Photographs showing major differences can be explained by ordinary factors, including footwear, perspective, posture, camera positioning, and differences in elevation.
In the much-discussed Balmoral image, Diana’s seated position provides the essential explanation.
Other photographs are more complicated because their exact circumstances may not be immediately apparent.
Some formal portraits support the observation that Charles was presented as taller.
But whether each arrangement was intentional, and what motivated it, cannot be established simply by looking at the final picture.
The distinction is important.
A visual pattern may exist without every example having the same explanation.
And an interesting sociological interpretation does not automatically transform an ordinary photograph into proof of a coordinated effort.
