The Strange Height Difference That Caught People’s Attention
One of the most intriguing aspects of the Balmoral photograph is how dramatically it seems to change the physical proportions of the couple.
Charles appears to tower above Diana.
His head is noticeably higher, and the positions of their shoulders reinforce the impression that he is much taller.
Without any additional context, someone unfamiliar with the couple might reasonably conclude that Charles was considerably taller than his wife.
Yet their commonly reported heights tell a different story.
Both Charles and Diana have frequently been described as standing approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, or about 178 centimeters, although reported measurements vary slightly between sources.
In other words, they were widely understood to be very close in height.
This makes the Balmoral photograph particularly striking.
How could two people of nearly equal height appear so different in one image?
And why do photographs from other occasions sometimes show them standing almost level with one another?
