But something changed three weeks before my twenty-second birthday.
He began calling me almost every evening.
“Emily, are you alone?”
“Emily, has your mother told you anything?”
“Emily, do you remember the bedroom upstairs?”
His questions made me uncomfortable.
When I told my mother, her face went pale.
“Stay away from your grandfather for a while,” she said.
“Why?”
“Just promise me.”
But she refused to explain.
Then came Friday evening.
Grandpa invited me to dinner at a beautiful restaurant outside town.
He wore his best suit, the one he usually saved for special occasions.
Throughout dinner, he barely touched his food.
Instead, he kept staring at me.
At one point, his eyes filled with tears.
“You look so much like her,” he whispered.
“Like whom, Grandpa?”
He quickly shook his head.
“Nobody, sweetheart.”
When the waiter brought dessert, Grandpa reached across the table and took my hand.
“Tonight, you will finally be mine.”
