What was supposed to happen?
I reached for my phone.
The battery was almost dead.
Before I could call anyone, the bedroom door slowly opened.
Grandpa stood in the darkness.
He wasn’t wearing his glasses.
His hands were trembling.
“Grandpa?”
He approached my bed.
Then he placed one hand gently on my leg.
“I have to do it tonight,” he whispered.
I pulled away.
“Do WHAT?”
He looked toward the hallway.
“Please, Emily. Don’t scream. Just come with me.”
“No! Tell me what’s happening!”
His eyes filled with tears.
“If I wait until morning, it may be too late.”
I jumped out of bed and backed toward the window.
“Stay away from me!”
Grandpa stopped immediately.
He raised both hands.
“Sweetheart, I’m not going to hurt you.”
“Then open the front door!”
He slowly removed the key from his pocket and placed it on the dresser.
