“Tonight, You Will Finally Be Mine,” My 74-Year-Old Grandfather Said, Gripping Me Tightly Around the Waist. I Was Only 22 Years Old. That Evening, He Took Me to His House, Locked the Front Door, and Whispered, “Don’t Tell Anyone… Especially Your Mother.” At 3 A.M., While I Was Lying in Bed, My Grandfather Quietly Opened My Bedroom Door, Approached Me, and Placed His Trembling Hand on My Leg. “I Have to Do It Tonight,” He Whispered. I Was Completely Paralyzed with Fear…

“But why did you say it had to happen tonight?” I asked.

Grandpa took a deep breath.

Then he handed me a hospital appointment card.

“I’m having heart surgery tomorrow morning, Emily. The doctors say it’s complicated. I didn’t want to leave this world without keeping my promise to your grandmother.”

My heart broke.

“And the phone call?”

“My lawyer. He helped me finish the paperwork.”

“What paperwork?”

Grandpa pointed toward the wooden chest.

Underneath the letters was a document transferring ownership of his house into a family trust for my mother and me.

“I wanted to make sure neither of you would ever be afraid of losing your home again.”

I fell to my knees beside him.

“Grandpa, why didn’t you just tell me?”

He wiped his eyes.

“I was afraid your mother would stop me because she still feels guilty about everything we sacrificed. And I was afraid I wouldn’t find the courage once I saw you crying.”
