“Mom, I want to tell Grandma.”
She meant Carter’s mother, Patricia.
Patricia lived in another city. She was strict, but she had always treated me fairly.
Still, I shook my head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Everything will get better.”
Lily looked at me as if she didn’t believe me.
She was right.
Nothing got better.
A few days later, I woke feeling worse than ever. My head was spinning, and the pain around my abdomen had become sharper.
I told Carter:
“I can’t do it today.”
He stood beside the bed and looked down at me.
Then he spoke very calmly.
“Do you know how hard it is to love a woman who has completely let herself go?”
Something inside me went quiet.
I didn’t argue.
I didn’t cry.
I simply got dressed.
Outside, I could barely keep my eyes open.
Carter’s car followed me as usual.
