Chapter 3 — When Do These Mites Become a Problem?
The concern begins when Demodex becomes associated with inflammation or other eye symptoms.
An excessive population of mites can contribute to irritation around the eyelid and eyelashes.
According to ophthalmology references, Demodex may be associated with conditions such as blepharitis, conjunctivitis, chalazia and other ocular surface problems.

One particularly recognizable sign is a cylindrical sleeve or collar-like debris around the base of the eyelashes, sometimes called a Demodex collarette.
These deposits can contain material associated with mites, including partially digested epithelial material, waste and eggs.
Therefore, if someone repeatedly notices crusting or unusual debris concentrated around the roots of their eyelashes, especially together with irritation or redness, an eye examination can help determine the cause.
