Chapter 5 — Why Can the Eyelids Become Red and Inflamed?
The image shows intensely red eyelids, but redness alone does not prove that Demodex is responsible.
Blepharitis is a general term for inflammation of the eyelids, and it can have several causes. The American Academy of Ophthalmology describes factors including bacterial overgrowth, problems with eyelid oil glands, dandruff-related skin conditions and an over-population of microscopic Demodex mites.

Demodex may contribute to inflammation through several mechanisms. The mites can occupy follicles and glands, and their presence or waste products may contribute to irritation and
inflammatoryresponses.
This is why a person with persistent eyelid redness should not automatically assume:
“I have mites.”
A clinician needs to consider the full range of possible causes.
