“When I Broke My Leg, My Husband Left Me Home Alone With Our Three Babies and Said, ‘I’M NOT YOUR SERVANT! YOU’RE THEIR MOTHER, SO DEAL WITH IT!’ But the Next Evening, When He Came Home and Saw Who Was Sitting Beside Me, He Turned Pale and Screamed, ‘WHO BROUGHT HER HERE?!’”

When we first married, Patricia visited often. She was kind and gentle, but Michael insisted she interfered in our lives.

Eventually, he convinced me to keep my distance.

Yet when I called her with my broken leg and three babies to care for, she came immediately.

She hugged me, saw my cast, and burst into tears.

“Oh, Emily! How have you managed all alone?”

When I repeated Michael’s cruel words, she went strangely quiet.

“So he still hasn’t learned,” she whispered.

I didn’t understand until the following evening.

Now, standing before her trembling son, Patricia reached into her handbag and pulled out an old photograph.

It showed a young woman holding a baby while sitting in a wheelchair.

“Do you recognize this, Michael?”

“Mom, please…”

She turned toward me.

“Emily, when Michael was six months old, I was badly injured in a car accident. I could barely walk for months.”
