When My Baby Was Born With Down Syndrome, I Signed the Papers to Leave Him at the Hospital… But as I Was Leaving, a Nurse Ran After Me and Said One Sentence That Froze Me in Place

PART 2 — Full Story

I stopped in the middle of the hospital entrance.

The automatic doors opened and closed behind me, letting out the cold smell of medicine and rain.

My empty car seat hung from my arm.

It felt heavier than if my baby had been inside it.

Brian turned around sharply.

“What are you doing?” he asked the nurse.

But she didn’t look at him.

She looked at me.

Her eyes were red.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I tried to stay professional. But I watched you with your baby. And I can’t let you leave believing this was fully your choice.”
