After 47 years of marriage, I lost my teeth, stopped taking care of myself, and became an old woman who did nothing but housework. My husband no longer kissed me, and one day I overheard him saying, “I can’t live with this woman anymore.” But the next morning, I realized that after 47 years, I had never truly known my husband’s real character.

Today, I’m still 76. My hair is white, my face is wrinkled, and some mornings my back aches.

But I’m no longer ashamed of myself.

Sometimes, before bed, John wraps his arms around me and says,

“Mary, I’d still choose you today.”

“Even if I lost my teeth again?” I tease.

He laughs.

“Even if you lost every tooth and every hair on your head.”

Then he holds me closer.

“Just promise me one thing. Never believe you’ve stopped being the woman I love.”

And that’s when I understand something beautiful.

The greatest gift in life isn’t staying young.

It’s growing old beside someone who never stops seeing your worth.
