I slowly realized I’d spent so many years caring for everyone else that I’d forgotten myself.
One Sunday, our children and grandchildren visited.
John suggested taking a photograph together.
Normally, I would have turned my face away.
This time, I looked directly at the camera and smiled.
John sat beside me in his favorite white shirt, holding my hand.
We hung that photograph beside our wedding picture.
Our youngest granddaughter studied both pictures and asked,
“Grandpa, which picture shows how much you love Grandma?”
John smiled.
“In the first one, I was just learning how to love her. In the second, I finally understand how precious she is.”
His words brought tears to my eyes.
For years, I’d believed growing old had stolen my husband’s love.
But it wasn’t age that had separated us. It was all the feelings we’d been too afraid to share.
