I stopped smiling in front of people.
Whenever I looked in the mirror, I no longer recognized the woman John had once fallen in love with.
There was a time when I wore beautiful dresses, styled my hair, and even put on a little perfume while staying at home.
Now I spent every day wearing the same old clothes.
Every morning, I made breakfast, washed the dishes, cleaned the house, did the laundry, and spent the evening waiting for my husband to return from his usual activities.
I no longer felt like a woman.
I felt like an unpaid housekeeper in my own home.
John had changed, too.
He no longer told me I was beautiful. He didn’t kiss me in the mornings. Sometimes he spent the entire evening looking at his phone, barely noticing I was there.
But everything came to a head the day our neighbor came over for coffee.
