She looked at me, then at John, and jokingly said,
“John, do you remember what a beautiful wife you had when you were young?”
I gave an awkward smile, trying to hide my missing teeth.
John said nothing.
He simply lowered his head.
That silence hurt more than any insult could have.
That same evening, when he thought I was asleep, I overheard him talking on the phone.
“I can’t keep living like this with Mary,” he said in a tired voice.
My heart nearly stopped.
Then I heard a sentence that kept me awake all night.
“Tomorrow, I’m getting her out of the house. Everything is already arranged. She just can’t know anything about it.”
The next morning, John woke up unusually early.
He put on his best shirt and said to me,
“Mary, you’re not staying home today. Get ready. I’m taking you somewhere.”
