I remembered how John used to call me his beautiful girl. He always said that even if a hundred women stood before him, he’d still choose me.
Now I was ashamed to smile even in front of a mirror.
I managed to put on the dress. It was a little tight, but it still fit.
When I stepped into the hallway, John stared at me.
“Do I look ridiculous?” I asked.
“No, Mary.”
He straightened my collar and whispered, “You’ve simply forgotten who you are.”
His words confused me even more.
We got into the car. John barely spoke during the drive.
I wondered whether he was taking me to a nursing home.
Finally, we stopped outside an unfamiliar building.
A well-dressed woman in her fifties was waiting at the entrance.
She smiled at John.
“You finally made it. Everything is ready.”
My stomach tightened.
Was this the woman he’d been secretly calling?
