“John, what’s going on?”
The woman approached me.
“You must be Mary. I’m Linda. Your husband has visited me several times over the past three weeks.”
I turned toward John.
“Three weeks? You told me you were meeting your friends!”
He remained silent.
Tears filled my eyes.
“If you’ve found another woman, at least have the courage to tell me!”
Linda looked horrified.
“Oh, Mary! You’ve misunderstood everything.”
Then I noticed the sign beside the entrance.
It was a dental clinic.
I froze.
Linda explained that they specialized in dental restoration for older adults.
“Your husband told us you’ve stopped smiling. He wanted to know whether we could help.”
I stared at John.
“You did all this because of my teeth?”
“Not just your teeth,” he replied softly.
Linda explained that John had noticed how I’d stopped attending gatherings, avoided family photographs, and covered my mouth whenever I laughed.
