When I first looked in the mirror, I stood completely still.
My smile wasn’t perfect.
But it was mine.
And I was finally smiling again.
That evening, John waited in the kitchen with a small bouquet of flowers.
“Let me see that smile,” he said.
I laughed.
He approached me and kissed me gently.
I couldn’t hold back my tears.
But the greatest change wasn’t my new teeth.
One evening, John found me washing dishes in my old house clothes.
He took the sponge from my hand.
“Enough, Mary. You’re my wife, not my maid. This house belongs to both of us. We should share the work.”
I laughed.
“It took you 47 years to remember that?”
“Better late than never.”
From then on, we changed our routines.
John helped around the house, and I reserved one day each week just for myself.
Sometimes we walked together, visited a café, or sat in the park talking.
