Robert gently took my hand.
“Because I was terrified of hurting you all over again. I wanted to be absolutely certain before giving you hope. And once everything was confirmed, Susan and I decided to surprise you during our first trip together.”
I turned toward Susan.
“And the wedding ring?”
She opened a small jewelry box.
Inside was Robert’s wedding ring.
“Father told me he’d worn this ring since the day you married. He wanted me to have it as the first keepsake from my real family. And he ordered new wedding rings for both of you to celebrate your anniversary.”
I looked back at Robert.
“Then why did you disappear like that?”
He took a deep breath.
“Susan’s daughter suddenly became ill while they were traveling. They were rushing to the hospital, and I went with them. My phone died, and I didn’t manage to tell the driver where I was going. I’m so sorry, Margaret.”
