At 54, My Husband Became Ashamed to Be Seen With Me in Public Because of My Weight. But the Worst Moment Came When He Picked Up Our 8-Month-Old Granddaughter and Said, “Never Leave This Baby Alone With My Wife Again.” My Daughter Burst Into Tears, and I Froze. When I Asked Why, My Husband Replied, “Because I’ve Seen What She Does to the Baby When Nobody Else Is Home.”

After hearing those words, I looked at the photograph again.

Following my hospital visit, we’d agreed that I would ask for help whenever necessary while lifting or caring for Lily until I regained my strength.

That didn’t make me any less of a loving grandmother.

A few days later, Robert posted that photograph on his Facebook page.

Underneath it, he’d written just one sentence:

“Here are the two most precious smiles in my life: my wife and my granddaughter.”

I cried for a long time when I read those words.

Not because I was sad.

But because, at 54, I’d finally understood something I wished I’d learned much earlier.

A person can have health problems.

A person can be overweight.

They can struggle to move and sometimes need help.

But none of those things mean they are unworthy of respect, love, or happiness.

I’m still a plus-size woman today.
