I left my three-year-old son in the care of his seventeen-year-old brother while I worked an exhausting double shift at the hospital. I thought my boys were safe at home. Then my phone rang, and a police officer’s words made my blood run cold.

Officer Benny took a deep breath and looked at me.

“When we arrived, your son kept asking whether Mr. Henson would survive. Then he said, ‘Please save him. My mom already lost my dad, and I can’t bear the thought of her losing someone else.’”

My heart broke.

Logan wiped his tears, trying to hide them. “I was scared, Mom. When Dad died, I promised myself I’d do everything I could to help someone else. I just didn’t want another family to feel that pain.”

I wrapped my arms around him, holding him as tightly as I could.

“Oh, sweetheart,” I whispered, “you don’t have to carry the world’s pain on your shoulders. You’re still my child, and you deserve to be taken care of, too.”

For the first time in months, Logan cried openly against me.

A few days later, Walter’s daughter called. Her father was recovering, and the doctors believed Logan’s quick actions had helped save his life. She thanked him through tears.
