I left my three-year-old son in the care of his seventeen-year-old brother while I worked an exhausting double shift at the hospital. I thought my boys were safe at home. Then my phone rang, and a police officer’s words made my blood run cold.

“I’ve been taking CPR classes since last fall,” he admitted. “Because of Dad. I kept wondering if things might have been different if someone had known how to help him.”

I pulled Logan into my arms, crying against his shoulder. All that time, I’d mistaken his silence for trouble when he was quietly turning his grief into something beautiful.

But Officer Benny wasn’t finished.

“Rachel, there’s one more thing,” he said softly. “Your son told us something at the scene that I believe you need to hear.”

Logan’s eyes filled with tears.

“Please, don’t,” he whispered.

The officer gently shook his head.

“Your mother deserves to know how much you love her.”

And as he began revealing Logan’s final words, I realized my son had been carrying a secret far heavier than I had ever imagined.
