I married a complete stranger who was dying of cancer on his birthday to fulfill his final wish. But after his funeral, his lawyer knocked on my door and said, “He made me wait until today to tell you WHO HE REALLY WAS.”

Only seven people attended his funeral. I didn’t recognize any of them. They were all dressed in expensive black clothing, but none of them spoke to me.

One elderly woman, in particular, stared at me throughout the entire service, as though she were trying to understand why I was there.

When I returned home, I removed my wedding ring and stared at it for a long time.

Our marriage had lasted only nine days, but my grief was real.

That evening, someone knocked on my door.

William’s lawyer, Mr. Anderson, was standing on my doorstep.

He held a thick envelope in his hand.

“William instructed me to give you this letter only after his funeral,” he said. “He also asked that you read it before asking any questions.”

My hands began to shake as I read the first line.

“Our meeting was not an accident. I have known about you since the day you were born.”
