I realized I had misunderstood so much, while Robert’s intimidating behavior and the rumors around town had only made my fears worse.
Two weeks later, I received confirmation of my scholarship.
The foundation covered my tuition, and through separate assistance Robert helped arrange, most of our overdue rent was paid and my mother’s necessary medical tests were covered.
I was finally able to continue my education.
Four years later, when I graduated from college, three people sat in the front row of the audience.
My mother, Linda, and Robert.
After receiving my diploma, I walked over to him.
“You know, that night I truly believed you were going to hurt me.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know, Emily. And I’m still ashamed of what I did. I should have treated you with respect from the very beginning.”
I hugged him.
“But afterward, you changed my life.”
