When some of the last guests began to leave, Dad walked past me and said very quietly,
“Sarah, come into the kitchen.”
His face was so serious that I didn’t even ask what was wrong.
As soon as we entered the kitchen, he closed the door.
“Be here tomorrow morning at ten.”
“Why?”
Dad stared at the floor for several seconds.
Then he said,
“Because tomorrow, your mother is going to learn something about our marriage.”
My heart seemed to stop.
“What?”
He lifted his eyes.
“Something I should have told her back when we weren’t even married yet.”
“Dad… what did you do?”
He slowly shook his head.
“It’s not only about what I did.”
Then he looked toward the living room, where Mom was still smiling and talking with the remaining guests.
And he said the sentence that kept me awake all night.
“Tomorrow, a woman is going to knock on this door—someone your mother believes she will never see again.”
