She lowered her voice.
“Your father has been acting strangely lately. He used to leave his bedroom curtains open. Now, whenever someone is outside, he closes them immediately.”
“Anything else?”
She hesitated.
“The strangest thing is that I keep hearing a little girl’s voice coming from that room.”
My fingers went cold.
“What little girl?”
“I don’t know, Sarah. I can’t tell whether it’s your Emily or another child. But I’ve heard that voice several times when the curtains were closed.”
I could barely speak.
Mrs. Wilson shook her head.
“I couldn’t understand the words. I could hear her asking questions and your father answering. But whenever I approached the window, the conversation seemed to stop.”
I stared at her.
“Are you sure?”
“Sarah, I don’t want to accuse your father of anything. But if my granddaughter visited that house every Sunday, I’d want to know what was happening behind those curtains.”
