I left without saying goodbye.
In my car, I called Dad.
No answer.
I called again.
Nothing.
I drove straight to his house.
His car was in the driveway.
The curtains were closed.
I knocked three times.
Silence.
I used my spare key and stepped inside.
“Dad?”
Nothing.
Then I heard movement upstairs.
I approached the staircase.
A woman’s voice came from the bedroom.
“Do you think she’ll recognize herself?”
My father’s voice answered.
“I hope so. Just make sure Sarah doesn’t see it yet.”
I froze.
Then Dad added, “We have to finish before Sunday. After that, we won’t be able to hide it anymore.”
I rushed upstairs.
His bedroom door was locked.

“DAD! OPEN THE DOOR!”
Something fell inside.
“Sarah?” he shouted. “What are you doing here?”
“OPEN IT!”
“Wait! Please don’t come in yet!”
My hands shook as I grabbed the spare bedroom key from the hallway.
