“Mom, this is Linda. She’s 62 years old. We’re in love.”
At first, I laughed, thinking it was a joke.
But Jake was serious.
“She’s forty years older than me, and I know you won’t understand. But we’ve decided to live together.”
Linda approached me, took my hand, and calmly said:
“Susan, I know what you’re thinking. But I don’t want anything from your son except his trust.”
Those words sounded strange.
Why was she talking about trust instead of love?
During lunch, Linda kept asking questions about our family.
She wanted to know how long we had lived in that house, whether I had raised Jake alone after my husband’s death, and whether we had any other relatives in town.
When I told her that the house belonged entirely to me, she suddenly fell silent.
Then she looked at Jake.
There was something in the way they exchanged glances that terrified me.
