“What?”
Robert looked at Margaret.
“When I found her, I discovered she was living in a small residence for elderly people. She has no home of her own and no family nearby. And her doctors have told her she has a serious heart condition.”
Margaret tried to interrupt him.
“Robert, please…”
But he continued.
“Last week, Margaret decided to move to another state because she believed nobody here wanted her.”
At that moment, Emily suddenly exclaimed,
“But I told her she could live with us!”
The room fell silent.
My daughter looked at me.
“Mom, you always say family means never leaving anyone alone. And Grandma is very lonely.”
I looked at Margaret.
Tears were streaming down her face.
This woman had lost her son without ever having the chance to reconcile with him.
For years, she had lived with the belief that her only child had died hating her.
