He saw Lily.
All the color drained from his face.
“Sarah?”
Lily stepped toward him.
“No. I’m Lily.”
My father grabbed the back of a chair.
His eyes moved to the photograph.
“My daughter?”
Lily nodded.
My father began trembling.
“I looked for you,” he whispered. “I searched for you for years. They told me you didn’t want to see me.”
Lily took a step closer.
“And they told me you were the one who abandoned me.”
At that moment, for the first time in my life, I watched my father fall to his knees and cry.
Lily knelt beside him.
They held each other for a long time.
Grandma sat quietly in her chair, watching them.
Then my father approached her.
I expected him to shout.
But he only asked,
“Mom, have you really been waiting for me every Sunday?”
Grandma nodded.
“For you and your daughter, Robert. Every Sunday.”
