“But why, Dad?”
He stared at me for a long moment before answering.
“Because my mother already destroyed our family once. I won’t let it happen again.”
After that conversation, I started visiting Grandma even more often.
She never said anything bad about my father. Sometimes, she just stared out the window and whispered softly,
“One day, he’ll understand everything.”
One Sunday last October, I went to her house without calling first.
The moment I stepped into the kitchen, I was surprised.
The table was once again covered with food. Soup, boiled meat, fresh vegetables, bread, fruit…
But this time, Grandma wasn’t smiling.
She was sitting at the end of the table, staring at the old calendar hanging on the wall.
I noticed that her hands were trembling.
“Grandma, what’s wrong?”
“Emily, sit down. You need to be here today.”
“Why?”
She turned toward me.
“Because today, someone I’ve been waiting for twenty-three years is finally coming.”
