My heart began pounding.
“Who?”
Grandma fell silent. Then she reached beneath the table and pulled out an old, yellowed envelope.
“Your father believes this person is dead. And if he finds out they’re alive, he’ll never forgive me.”
I wanted to ask what she meant, but just then, Grandma’s phone rang.
An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.
She answered, listened for only a few seconds, and suddenly turned pale.
“No… please… don’t bring them here…”
The phone slipped from her hand.
I rushed toward her.
“Grandma, who was that?”
She grabbed my hand so tightly that it hurt.
“Emily, promise me that whatever you see, you won’t tell your father.”
And at that exact moment, the doorbell rang.
Grandma closed her eyes and burst into tears.
“Oh, my God… they’ve really brought her…”
I walked to the door and opened it.
Standing on the doorstep was a man around sixty years old, wearing a dark coat. Beside him stood a young woman holding an old suitcase.
