“Robert, let the baby stay with them for a few weeks. You need some rest too. She’ll come back afterward.”
And my father finally agreed.
But a few weeks turned into months.
One day, David called Grandma and told her that Sarah wanted the baby to stay with her family and that they were planning to move to another state.
My father lost his temper.
He demanded that his daughter be returned.
But Grandma said something he could never forgive.
“I signed the papers, Robert. The child is staying with their family.”
That day, my father walked out of the house.
And for twenty-three years, he never forgave his mother.
I stared at Grandma in horror.
“You gave away Dad’s child without his permission?”
Grandma began crying.
“Yes. But at the time, I thought I was doing the right thing.”
Suddenly, Lily stood up.
“Wait a minute. I’ve been told my entire life that my father didn’t want me. That he was the one who abandoned me.”
