My throat tightened.
Then Emily began crying.
“Miss Mary, please don’t hate me. I didn’t know my daddy. I never wanted to hurt anybody.”
I knelt before her.
“Oh, sweetheart. You’ve done absolutely nothing wrong.”
And I hugged her.
Robert stood nearby, silently crying.
Then Emily showed me the last photograph in her album.
It was a picture of me, taken twenty-five years earlier, smiling while holding our youngest son.
“Where did you get this?”
“Daddy sent it to Mommy. I asked who the pretty lady was. Mommy said, ‘That’s the woman your father owes an apology to.’”
I looked toward Robert.
He approached slowly.
“Mary, I know I don’t deserve forgiveness. When I said our marriage was over, I meant the marriage where I kept hurting you while pretending nothing was wrong. I don’t want us to live that way anymore.”
“Do you even love me?” I asked.
