“The mother-daughter photo we never got to take.”
“My God! How dare you?” Maya shouted.
Adele remained calm. “You came here worried about how you would be seen by your new family. So I wanted them to see the family you left behind.”
Maya turned to me. “Say something, Robert. Tell her this isn’t the whole story.”
“My God”.
I got up.
“It isn’t,” I said.
Maya’s expression changed, as if she thought I could save her.
“The whole story is worse. I begged you to call. I begged you to send cards. I begged you to remember they were little girls, not furniture you left in a house that had become too small for you.”
Harry stared at her. “You told me you’d changed your number.”
“The whole story is even worse.”
“I kept the same number,” I said. “Same email. Same house. It’s just that you preferred the story where I was the villain.”
