My hands began trembling.
I sat down and opened her letter.
“Robert, my darling, if you’re reading this, it means Daniel has finally kept the promise he made to me. I know you trusted us more than anyone in the world. And that’s exactly why what you’re about to discover will hurt you so deeply…”
I stopped reading.
My heart was pounding so loudly that I felt the entire house could hear it.
Then I read the next lines.
“Before you continue, please remember one thing. None of this was your fault. You were a good husband. A wonderful father. And you treated Daniel like your own brother.”
Suddenly, I remembered an evening 24 years earlier.
I’d returned from a business trip two days early.
It was almost eleven at night.
Daniel’s car was parked outside our house.
When I entered, an unusual silence filled the kitchen.
