Margaret was crying.
Daniel was standing beside the window.
When they saw me, they both looked so startled that it seemed I wasn’t supposed to be there.
“What’s happened?” I asked.
Daniel quickly answered:
“Nothing, Robert. We just had a little disagreement.”
Margaret couldn’t even look me in the eyes.
I believed them.
After all, they were the two people closest to me.
Daniel left quickly that night.
Margaret barely spoke until morning.
For 24 years, I’d considered that evening nothing more than an ordinary disagreement.
But now everything took on a completely different meaning.
I returned to the letter.
And I read a sentence that changed everything forever.
“Robert, during the fifteenth year of our marriage, Daniel and I did something we never should have done. It wasn’t just once. And on the night you unexpectedly returned from your business trip, we had just decided how we were going to hide everything from you…”
