When we found out our sixth child was going to be a girl, my husband burst into tears and said one sentence that still echoes in my ears to this day.

And one night, I made a decision.

A decision that still frightens me to this day.

All day, I walked around the house with my hand on my belly. I could feel the baby moving, but at the same time, Michael’s silence echoed in my head. It felt as if this child, before even being born, had already brought pain into our home.

That night, Michael was sitting in the living room. The light was dim. The girls were asleep. The house was quiet, but in that silence, I could hear my own heartbeat.

I walked up to him.

“Michael… I need to tell you something.”

He lifted his eyes.

“I’m listening.”

I swallowed my tears with difficulty.

“I’m thinking… about not keeping the baby.”

At first, he thought he had heard me wrong.

He slowly raised his head.

“What did you say?”

“If she makes you this unhappy… maybe it’s better… maybe we shouldn’t continue…”
