When we found out our sixth child was going to be a girl, my husband burst into tears and said one sentence that still echoes in my ears to this day.

The words broke in my mouth. I couldn’t believe I was the one saying them. But I had become so afraid of losing him that I was ready to lose something I had not even held in my arms yet.

Michael suddenly jumped to his feet.

His eyes filled with tears.

Then he said something that literally stopped my breath.

“Do you really think I’m sad because we’re having a girl?”

I froze.

“But…”

He held his head with both hands, as if the pain he had kept inside for years could no longer fit within him.

“I’m sad because for years, I made all of you believe that you weren’t enough for me…”

My heart was pounding.

For the first time, he began speaking about the things he had hidden for years.

“I wanted a son. Yes. I won’t lie. I dreamed of having a boy. But not because I didn’t love my daughters. I just thought a son would carry my name, continue my path, be the one in whom I would see myself. But one day, I realized I already had five children waiting for me at the door every day. Five hearts calling me Dad. And now… a sixth.”
