But Robert walked toward me, took my hand, and said loudly enough for everyone to hear:
“No. This time, you’re standing beside me.”
My sister laughed.
“Careful, Robert! Margaret’s going to block you out of the picture!”
I froze.
I’d heard jokes like that my entire life.
Usually, everyone laughed while I pretended not to be hurt.
But this time, Robert didn’t laugh.
He looked calmly at my sister and said:
“Margaret is my wife. And I’d appreciate it if you stopped making jokes about her body.”
The room fell silent.
I stared at my husband.
He continued.
“I’ve spent thirty-two years with this woman. She raised our children. She spent countless nights beside my bed when I was sick. And now she loves our granddaughter with her whole heart. If you want to describe Margaret, talk about those things.”
I couldn’t hold back my tears.
