I turned toward David.
“Why?”
He remained silent for a long time.
Finally, he answered.
“Because my wife and I had been unable to have children for years. When Lily came into our home, we became attached to her. I knew that if Robert and Sarah reconciled, they would take her away from us.”
Lily covered her face with her hands.
“You stole my entire life…”
David began crying.
“I really did love you, sweetheart. But I was afraid of losing you.”
Grandma wiped away her tears.
“Years later, I realized what a terrible mistake I’d made. I tried to tell Robert everything, but he wouldn’t listen. He sent my letters back unopened. I couldn’t find Sarah either. By the time I learned that she had died, it was too late.”
I looked at the seven plates on the table.
“Grandma, why do you prepare so much food every Sunday?”
