“Were you having an affair?”
He nodded.
“And Emily?”
“She’s my daughter.”
I felt sick.
For ten years, my husband had hidden another child from me.
“So while you were telling me I was fat and unattractive, you were building another family?”
Robert began crying.
“Jennifer and I never lived together. She raised Emily herself. I helped financially, but I wasn’t part of their everyday lives.”
“Then why tell me now?”
“Jennifer died a year ago. Emily lives with her aunt. She recently learned who her father is.”
I stood up.
“And you brought me here to introduce me to your secret daughter? How could you?”
Robert looked at me desperately.
“Because Emily asked to meet you.”
I laughed bitterly.
“Why would she want to meet the woman whose marriage you destroyed?”
“Mary, she knows about everything. She specifically asked me to bring you here.”
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
